Local Elections

The story of getting on the voting list.

Registering to vote

With the upcoming local elections I thought I would see if, as a person with no fixed abode, I could register to vote. Went on to the gov.uk/register-to-vote web site and tried to follow the process.
Start now > I live in England, I am British, entered my DoB, entered my full name (less middle name) and confirmed that I have not changed my name. Gave my National Insurance number. I could not enter a post code as I don't have one, so I clicked on 'I don't know what postcode to use'.
Apparently if you do not have a permanent address you are either 'homeless and living in temporary accommodation', 'a long term patient in a psychiatric hospital' or 'a prisoner on long term remand'.
As I do not fit any of those categories and I cannot provide an address and I cannot produce documentation as to why I would be in danger if I registered to vote anonymously I followed the link to my local Electoral Registration Office, which led me to Hinckley & Bosworth Borough Council web site.
It was really easy to locate the instructions for Registering without a permanent address.
All I need to do is get a special form, which Electoral Services can send to me, I will need to find out where they will send it to!
Alternatively, I can break the Covid guidelines for the vulnerable and go into their offices to collect one.

I contacted the Electoral Services via their contact form requesting that they send me a Special Form to register to vote without a post code providing them with my email address and telephone number, and was given a reference number for the contact.
